Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE is one of the most influential scientists, conservationists, and humanitarians of our time. Revered for her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees and her tireless advocacy for the natural world, Dr. Goodall has transformed global understanding of primates, inspired generations of environmental stewards, and continues to be a leading voice for hope, compassion, and action in the face of planetary challenges.
Born in London, England, in 1934, Goodall's fascination with animals began early — a childhood curiosity that would evolve into one of the most important scientific legacies of the 20th century. In 1960, without formal scientific training, she traveled to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, where she began what would become the world’s longest-running study of wild chimpanzees.
Her observations — including chimpanzees making and using tools, forming complex social structures, and displaying emotions like joy and grief — revolutionized primatology and challenged long-held distinctions between humans and other animals. Her research changed how science views animal intelligence, behavior, and even the definition of what it means to be human.
In 1977, Dr. Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a global nonprofit dedicated to wildlife research, habitat conservation, and community-centered development programs. Through JGI, she has advanced not only scientific inquiry but also environmental education, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods in Africa and beyond.
In 1991, she established Roots & Shoots, a global youth-led movement operating in over 100 countries that encourages young people to identify problems in their communities and take positive, local action. The program continues to inspire millions of young changemakers working in areas of environmental protection, social justice, and animal welfare.
Dr. Goodall is a UN Messenger of Peace, a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE), and the recipient of countless honors, including the Templeton Prize, the Kyoto Prize, the UNESCO Gold Medal, and more than 45 honorary degrees. Despite being in her 90s, she continues to travel the globe over 300 days a year (including virtually in recent years), delivering her message of urgent action and unyielding hope.
Through her work, Dr. Goodall reminds us that every individual — no matter how young or small — has the power to make a difference. Her life is a testament to the enduring impact of curiosity, compassion, and a deep respect for all living things.
