Skydiggers

Skydiggers are a beloved Canadian roots-rock band whose rich harmonies, poetic lyrics, and timeless songwriting have made them a cornerstone of the country’s music scene for over three decades. Known for their emotionally resonant sound and understated charm, Skydiggers continue to captivate audiences with songs that speak to both the personal and the political, wrapped in the warmth of acoustic guitars and the strength of shared voices.

Formed in Toronto in the late 1980s, the band was founded by longtime collaborators Andy Maize (vocals) and Josh Finlayson (guitar), whose creative partnership remains the heart of the group to this day. Blending folk, rock, and Americana influences, Skydiggers quickly earned a reputation for their compelling live performances and evocative songwriting.

Their self-titled debut album in 1991 introduced fans to their signature sound, but it was the 1992 release Restless that brought them national acclaim. The record featured enduring classics like “A Penny More” and “I Will Give You Everything,” which became staples on Canadian radio and helped cement the band’s status as one of the country’s most vital roots acts.

Over the years, Skydiggers have continued to evolve, releasing a steady stream of albums that explore new sonic textures while staying true to their roots. From the lush orchestration of Desmond’s Hip City (1997) to the stripped-down intimacy of There and Back (2000), and the experimental edge of Northern Shore (2012), the band has consistently pushed its own boundaries. Their more recent releases — including Let’s Get Friendship Right (2019) and Bide Your Time (2022) — show a band still creatively curious and deeply connected to its audience.

A hallmark of Skydiggers’ music is its emotional honesty. Their songs often wrestle with themes of love, loss, memory, and resilience, delivered with humility and grace. The group’s ability to forge a deep bond with listeners—whether in a packed concert hall or a quiet festival tent—has earned them a multi-generational fanbase and critical acclaim.

Beyond their own work, members of Skydiggers have collaborated with some of Canada’s finest musicians, including members of Blue Rodeo, The Sadies, and Sarah Harmer, further anchoring their role in the country’s musical fabric.
