Gipsy Kings are international music legends whose intoxicating blend of flamenco, rumba, salsa, and pop has captivated audiences around the world for over three decades. With their fiery guitar work, rich harmonies, and percussive rhythms, the group brought the sound of southern Spain to the global stage — creating a genre all their own and redefining what world music could be.

Formed in the south of France in the late 1970s, the Gipsy Kings are comprised of descendants of Spanish Romani families who fled Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. The group originally featured two musical dynasties: the Reyes family (sons of flamenco singer José Reyes) and the Baliardo family (descendants of flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata). Their shared heritage and deep-rooted musical traditions gave rise to a sound known as "rumba flamenca" — an energetic fusion of traditional flamenco rhythms with pop arrangements and pan-Latin grooves.

The Gipsy Kings rose to global fame with their self-titled breakthrough album Gipsy Kings in 1987, which featured hits like “Bamboléo,” “Djobi Djoba,” and “Un Amor.” The album was a worldwide smash, going multi-platinum in multiple countries and introducing millions to their infectious style. Sung primarily in a dialect of Spanish known as Caló, their music transcends language through pure emotion, rhythm, and virtuosity.

In the decades since, the Gipsy Kings have released a string of successful albums including Mosaïque, Estrellas, Compas, and Savor Flamenco — the latter of which won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2014. They have performed in over 100 countries, sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and contributed to film soundtracks (notably covering “Hotel California” for The Big Lebowski and appearing on the Toy Story 3 soundtrack with “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” in Spanish).

Their live performances are legendary — filled with passion, precision, and the unmistakable pulse of flamenco guitars and palmas (handclaps). Whether in intimate theaters or major arenas, the Gipsy Kings create an atmosphere of celebration, connection, and cultural pride.

While the band has experienced lineup shifts over the years (including separate touring groups under the Gipsy Kings name), the spirit of their music remains deeply authentic, rooted in family, tradition, and an enduring commitment to joy through rhythm.
