Lights is a JUNO Award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist known for her genre-blending sound, vivid world-building, and powerful voice — both literally and artistically. With a career that spans electro-pop, alt-rock, synthwave, and acoustic balladry, Lights has become one of Canada’s most versatile and visionary artists.

Born Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Timmins, Ontario, and raised in various parts of Canada, Lights emerged in the late 2000s with her breakthrough self-titled EP and debut album The Listening (2009). With dreamy synths, heartfelt lyrics, and her signature sweet-yet-commanding vocals, she quickly developed a passionate fanbase and earned the JUNO Award for New Artist of the Year in 2009.

Her 2011 follow-up, Siberia, marked a creative leap — adding grittier textures, dubstep influences, and deeper emotional weight. The record showcased her ability to evolve and experiment while staying true to her introspective core, and it solidified her as a force in the growing electronic pop landscape. It also featured collaborations with Holy Fuck and Shad, expanding her sound into bolder, genre-defying territory.

But Lights is more than a musician — she’s a world-builder. In 2017, she released Skin & Earth, a multimedia project that paired a concept album with a self-written, self-illustrated comic book series published by Dynamite Comics. The project received critical acclaim for its innovation and storytelling, blending dystopian narrative with anthemic, emotionally raw songs like “Giants” and “Savage.” It showed Lights as a true creative polymath — one who writes, draws, and produces entire worlds from the ground up.

Her follow-up EPs How to Sleep When You’re on Fire and Dead End, and 2022’s full-length album PEP, continued her evolution, fusing vibrant pop hooks with introspection, empowerment, and sparkling production. PEP especially leaned into themes of self-acceptance and resilience, while sonically pulling from hyperpop, alt-rock, and EDM.

Lights has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Bring Me The Horizon, Sleep Token, Kaskade, Felix Cartal, and Travis Barker, proving her adaptability across genres and scenes. She’s toured with the likes of Paramore, OneRepublic, and Young the Giant, and her charismatic live shows — complete with bold visuals and high-energy performance — have made her a fan-favourite on the festival circuit.

In addition to her music, Lights is a celebrated comic book creator, Twitch streamer, and advocate for mental health and LGBTQ+ communities. Her presence online and offstage is just as inspiring as her lyrics: unfiltered, creative, and unapologetically herself.
