Marianas Trench

Marianas Trench is a multi-platinum Canadian pop-rock band celebrated for their theatrical flair, intricate harmonies, and bold conceptual albums. Blending stadium-sized hooks with operatic ambition and heart-on-sleeve vulnerability, the band has become a staple of Canada’s modern rock and pop scene, known as much for their explosive live shows as their genre-bending studio craft.
Formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, the band features frontman Josh Ramsay (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Matt Webb (lead guitar), Mike Ayley (bass), and Ian Casselman (drums). From the start, Marianas Trench stood out for their musical ambition — weaving together elements of punk, pop, rock, and even Broadway-style drama into emotionally charged anthems and sprawling concept records.
Their debut album Fix Me (2006) introduced them as a high-energy alternative rock act with deeply personal lyrics, but it was 2009’s Masterpiece Theatre that signaled a dramatic creative leap. A concept album built like a three-act play, it fused orchestral arrangements, pop-punk punch, and Queen-esque vocal layers — earning the band critical acclaim and a rabid fanbase.
Ever After (2011) pushed things even further, delivering a seamless, story-driven album with zero breaks between tracks — a rarity in the age of singles. Hits like “Fallout,” “Haven’t Had Enough,” and “Stutter” dominated Canadian charts, while the album’s fairy-tale-inspired concept and arena-ready production established the band as one of the most ambitious acts in the country.
In 2015, Astoria paid homage to ‘80s coming-of-age films like The Goonies, combining nostalgia, heartbreak, and synth-laced rock with sweeping theatricality. The band’s attention to detail, from album design to music videos, made Astoria not just an album, but a full creative universe.
Their most recent release, Phantoms (2019), explored love, loss, and the supernatural with a darker, moodier sonic palette — led by emotionally charged singles like “I Knew You When” and “Glimmer.” Throughout it all, Josh Ramsay’s powerhouse vocals and production wizardry have remained the band’s secret weapon. (Ramsay also co-wrote and produced Carly Rae Jepsen’s international smash “Call Me Maybe.”)
