The Mavericks are a Grammy Award-winning American band celebrated for their genre-defying blend of country, rock, Tex-Mex, Latin, and Americana. With a sound as eclectic as it is unmistakable, the group has forged a unique musical identity built on soaring melodies, irresistible rhythms, and an unstoppable spirit of reinvention.

Formed in Miami, Florida in 1989, The Mavericks were founded by Raul Malo (vocals/guitar), Paul Deakin (drums), Robert Reynolds (bass), and Ben Peeler (guitar), though the lineup evolved over time. From the beginning, the band stood apart from the Nashville mainstream, blending honky-tonk and country roots with rockabilly flair, Cuban rhythms, and Roy Orbison-style drama — all anchored by Malo’s rich, operatic voice, widely considered one of the most powerful in contemporary music.

Their breakthrough came in the mid-1990s with a string of critically acclaimed albums including What a Crying Shame (1994), Music for All Occasions (1995), and Trampoline (1998). These records spawned hit singles like “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” “Here Comes the Rain,” and the title track “What a Crying Shame,” earning the band a loyal fanbase, widespread radio play, and multiple awards — including a Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group and several Country Music Association (CMA) and Academy of Country Music (ACM) honors.

Despite commercial success, The Mavericks never followed the conventional country playbook. Their albums were as likely to include lush string arrangements and mariachi horns as they were pedal steel guitar or rock ‘n’ roll swagger. This fearless musical curiosity set them apart — but also led to a hiatus in the early 2000s.

In 2012, The Mavericks reunited to wide acclaim and quickly reminded audiences what they’d been missing. Their post-reunion albums — including In Time (2013), Mono (2015), and Brand New Day (2017) — proved that the band had lost none of its creative fire. Their lyrics matured, their rhythms deepened, and their sound embraced even more global influences. In 2020, they released En Español, their first all-Spanish-language album — a vibrant tribute to Malo’s Cuban heritage and the broader Latin American musical tradition.

Live, The Mavericks are a revelation — turning every show into a danceable, cathartic, genre-hopping celebration. With a multicultural sound and an inclusive spirit, they’ve cultivated a diverse global audience that spans generations and backgrounds. Whether playing country festivals, jazz halls, or rock venues, The Mavericks always bring heart, soul, and rhythm.
